Everyone, including the horses had a well earned break over the Christmas / New Year Period with the members deciding not to plan a ride for January.
February 23rd had us heading off to Wirilda Park and what a great turn out we had, on one very perfect day. Riders from Neerim Junction, Stratford and Maffra joined in on our ride, while seven support members attended to help out and share lunch and a chat with us.
I was the lead rider, which was a little daunting, having just gone through the fires myself. However, I pulled it all together and we headed off straight up the hill behind the pumping station heading towards Moondarra Dam. The Christmas break showed on a few horses, with the first hill testing their fitness. Arriving on top of the ridge was magical. You could see Morwell (unfortunately still under smoke attack), Traralgon, Churchill, APM, and Yallourn Open Cut. The view was spectacular, although the smoke did remind us all of not so good times. On top of that ridge took one to another place, it was clear and we couldn’t smell the smoke which was a pleasant change.
At times I would look behind to check on the riders, and each time I did so, they were merrily chatting away with one another and then swapping around so they could chat to other riders.
We arrived back at Camp to a beautifully cooked lunch. Everyone sat around, had a feed and chatted on for quite some time, while the kids had fun in the river. Turns out they found a rope that you could swing across and drop into the water.
All in all it was a fantastic day.
I would like to thank our visitors for helping to make the day a great success, Jean and Linda for cooking lunch for us and for having the billy boiling for old timers like myself. I would also like to thank all the other supporters who came out and shared the day with us. It was great to see you out there. To the organisers, what can I say? You just do a fantastic job everytime.
March ride .... Blue Pools – Briagolong – everyone welcome.
