July CAMP – Wirrabara Forest – Friday 5 July – Monday 8 July 2013
Host: Teena Goodson & Sandy Jones Mobile Teena 0438847480
Ride Description:
Fri 5th Arrive and set up camp.
2pmride out- An easy 1.5 – 2hr Ride. Mainly soft forest tracks. Could be a creek crossing. Undulating.
Sat 6th The ride will start a bit later to allow people to travel up that morning if they can’t make it for the whole weekend. 10:30am ride out Set off for a 5-6 ride to Mount Ellen lookout and Sugar Gum lookout. We will need to take a saddle- bag lunch. A mixture of terrain, gravel roads, forest tracks and hills. Could be a creek crossing.
Sun 7th- 9am. Set off for a ride to the Bluff. About 8km. This is a steep climb but the views are worth it. Allow around 3hrs.
Mon 8th- 9am. Ride for about 1.5 hr. Pack up camp and head home.
Camp fee $3/person/night - You will need to be self sufficient for both horse & rider. No yards for the horses so your own portable or electric yards required. There is water for the horses but you will need to take our own people water for drinking etc. No facilities as the site but there is a toilet but it is about 500 mtrs from the camp (so if you have your own it might be a good idea to bring it). Camp fire will be going & we could probably find enough firewood lying around but it might be a good idea for each person to take a small amount just in case we can’t find any dry wood.
Limit of 10 riders. Any Questions please ring Teena. Please RSVP to Teena by 1/7/13 so that she can let the forestry office know.
Directions: Wirrabara Forest is situated in the Southern Flinders Ranges, west of the township of Wirrabara. From Adelaide, drive up through Clare, Gladstone and Laura. It will take about 3hrs to travel with a float from Gawler. When you get to Wirrabara township turn left at the Hotel onto Forest Rd (signposted). Continue along this road for about 9km. Go past the Forestry office on your left. The sheep yards are about 1km past the office on the left. Continue about 300m and you will see the double gates. I am hoping to be there by 11 am.
Cost- ATHRA member $4 Ride fee for the weekend or $2 Ride fee for 1 day. Please bring the correct change & place in tin at sign on book.
