Starting from the Back Road dam, the ride is mainly on wide, soft granite based tracks. There are some longs hills, both up and down, but the mainly gentle gradients make ideal places for trotting and cantering. From Back Road, we head towards Kingower, having some lovely views towards the north and east before ending up at Melville Caves. If people wish, we can tie the horses up and have a wander through the caves a short walk away. Depending on how we move along, this is an ideal spot for lunch.
After lunch it is approximately 1 hour back to the floats. A moderate level of fitness for horse and rider is required. Although the ride is mostly walking and technically easy, because of the great tracks we will have sections of trotting and cantering. Therefore, the ability to trot and canter safely in a group (both you and your horse) is required.
It is estimated that the ride will take about 4 to 4.5 hours including lunch. Tracks are generally a lovely granite sand although a section on the Old Kingower Rd can be a bit rocky in places.
Estimated distance – 19kms
Estimated duration – 4 hours
Directions: We leave from the Back Rd dam. Coming from Inglewood, Back Road is approximately 500m on the right past the Inglewood Rheola and Inglewood Melville Cave Rd fork. The Back Road sign can be difficult to see so we will have a sign indicating the turn off. If you need help with directions please contact me.
There is float parking about 100 meters up Back Rd from the main road. Watch for potholes and ruts in the road and leave room for others to park and keep the main Back Road clear.
*Note: These are estimates only and can change subject to weather, trail conditions, issues with horses and so on.
Equines should be shod or booted as we will travel over various surfaces.
Halter and lead rope to tie up and a drink bottle and saddlebag lunch.
