We had old members, newer members, a visitor, young horses, new horses and the well travelled, old faithful horses all riding together. Thanks to our Trail Boss Dee, and willing helper Phil, everyone had a good and safe ride. After Dee’s informative pre ride talk we all rode out the gates of the Pony Club grounds and down the road with Kerry as lead rider. Some of the younger horses were already anticipating a fun ride. It was a nice change for me not to be lead rider which gave me a chance to meet and chat with members I hadn’t ridden with before. We made our way down the track into the bush. Along the way we seemed to come across a few more obstacles than usual but surprisingly all the horses coped really well. As we approached the big hill which would lead us up to the lookout, Dee decided that we would continue down along the creek for a while instead to try and help settle a couple of the horses that were still a little “over keen”. That turned out to be a great decision as by the time we got back to the base of the big hill, the large group had divided into 2 with Phil heading the now slower group and those who wanted or needed to let their horse have a nice canter up the hill without stirring or stressing the other group. Well done guys!! Once we got to the “five Ways” everyone stopped for a break and a bit of a chat. It was then decided that we would head back to the base as the weather was starting to heat up and it was almost lunchtime anyway. Amanda was riding her pretty but young, newly broken Standardbred Mare who was a bit unsure of what was going on. She was being well behaved but she was forward, on the bit and very alert on the trail out. By the time we had turned for home Amanda’s pretty young mare was walking on a loose rein and looked like a horse that had been ridden on trails for years. The ride back to the Pony Club grounds was controlled, with still plenty of talk between riders. Thanks to Phil, Dee, Dagmar, Leanne, Teresa, Kerry, Debbie, Glenda, Amanda, Louise, Carly, Jo and Julie for making our first ride for the year so well attended and so pleasurable.
