Be a part of Australia’s premier representative body for Trail Horse Riders.
Ride with confidence when you have an ATHRA club membership.
ATHRA provides members with great value and benefits.
The club was formed in 1990/91, following the Mundaring to Kalgoorlie Pipeline Trek in 1988. It was incorporated in May 1992.
At present, the club has over 170 financial members from areas all over WA. The club runs non-competitive trail rides and is open to both horse riders and harness drivers. We invite any breed of horse that is sound and sensible and any saddle or gear that fits within the Club Rules, and that you find safe and comfortable. In the past, the club has been an adult club, but from 2003, juniors over 12yo have been allowed to join suitable events.
Treks are generally run from a private property or a place where vehicles and floats are secure. Trails are generally through tracks in the bush, through private property or along quiet back roads. We generally have two groups to choose from - the "Steady Eddies", for first-timers and those who prefer a slower pace (mostly walking and trotting); and the "Nimble Neddies", who do longer distances at a faster pace (walk, trot, canter). Participants spread out along the trail in pairs or small groups, and the rides are very social, with lots of chat and laughter to be heard.
Evenings are usually spent around the campfire (in season), camp cooking, telling yarns and relaxing.
We hold a weekend trek or day ride every two to three weeks, and a few 3-4 day treks each year. An annual two-week trek is organised, which can either be a travelling trek (different camp each night), or a series of camp bases with rides clover-leafing out from them. Total distances covered are 200-400 km, travelling 20-30 km per day, with some rest days incorporated. Annual treks have been held as far north as Mt Augustus/Gascoyne Junction, east to Kalgoorlie and south around Hopetown, Bremer Bay.
Because of the widespread area members come from, treks are generally held in different locations in the Perth region and southwest of WA. We're always keen to travel further afield if one of our members from outside these areas offers to host a trek.
Weekend treks usually include a half-day ride (12-20 km) commencing after lunch on the first day, to allow everyone time to arrive and set up. A full day ride (25-35 km) is run on the middle day/s of a long weekend, with a picnic lunch out on the trail. Often, though not always, someone in a support vehicle accompanies the ride to bring along the lunches, gear, etc. On the last day, a morning ride (12-15 km) is held, allowing time for everyone to pack up and travel home after lunch. Members can also join in for a shorter period if they can't stay for the full weekend.
